I honestly have no idea have I haven't sang praises for this place online earlier considering how I've been coming here on a near-weekly basis for literal years. I started eating at the Northcote branch when I was like 10 years old, fell in love with it, and immediately started eating at this larger Albany branch once it opened.
I'm convinced this place genuinely has the best soup buns worldwide. And that's saying a lot, considering I often go out of my way to try soup buns whenever I see them. In fact, I've even sought out soup buns in Shanghai which is LITERALLY WHERE THEY ORIGINATE FROM and none have stood a chance against Little Yum. The skin is astoundingly thin, the amount of soup inside is very generous, and the soup has a very special and amazing flavour that I cannot find anywhere else no matter how hard I try.
My top recommendations would be the steamed pork soup buns, steamed crab soup buns, pan-fried pork soup buns, and pan-fried soup dumplings.
While the soup buns are the main highlight, there's a lot of other great stuff on the menu too. Their scallion oil noodles are some of my favourite, being extremely flavourful, if a bit oily. The chilli oil wontons are great. The beef curry vermicelli noodles are great. The egg dumpling noodles are great. The sichuan chicken is great. I will say that the pork ribs are kinda mid though. They get stuck in your teeth a lot.
If you're getting soup buns or noodles of any kind, I recommend you dine in and don't take them out. The soup buns stick to each other and break easily, leading to the delicious soup leaking out. If left for too long, the skin will soak up the soup so there won't be much soup left inside. The noodles clump together if left for too long.
I miss this place so much now that I'm not in New Zealand anymore :( I'll definitely be coming back here the moment I visit NZ.
