REVIEWS

quote I honestly have no idea have I haven't sang praises for this place online earlier considering how I've been coming here on a near-weekly basis for literal years. I started eating at the Northcote branch when I was like 10 years old, fell in love with it, and immediately started eating at this larger Albany branch once it opened. I'm convinced this place genuinely has the best soup buns worldwide. And that's saying a lot, considering I often go out of my way to try soup buns whenever I see them. In fact, I've even sought out soup buns in Shanghai which is LITERALLY WHERE THEY ORIGINATE FROM and none have stood a chance against Little Yum. The skin is astoundingly thin, the amount of soup inside is very generous, and the soup has a very special and amazing flavour that I cannot find anywhere else no matter how hard I try. My top recommendations would be the steamed pork soup buns, steamed crab soup buns, pan-fried pork soup buns, and pan-fried soup dumplings. While the soup buns are the main highlight, there's a lot of other great stuff on the menu too. Their scallion oil noodles are some of my favourite, being extremely flavourful, if a bit oily. The chilli oil wontons are great. The beef curry vermicelli noodles are great. The egg dumpling noodles are great. The sichuan chicken is great. I will say that the pork ribs are kinda mid though. They get stuck in your teeth a lot. If you're getting soup buns or noodles of any kind, I recommend you dine in and don't take them out. The soup buns stick to each other and break easily, leading to the delicious soup leaking out. If left for too long, the skin will soak up the soup so there won't be much soup left inside. The noodles clump together if left for too long. I miss this place so much now that I'm not in New Zealand anymore :( I'll definitely be coming back here the moment I visit NZ.

quote I've had a lot of dumplings in my life and this place definitely is one of the top ones I've ever had in my life. The xiao long bao had a thin skin and the pork melts in mouth. It is also juicy from the soup, I prefer slightly more soup but it is as good as it can get. The fried bread dumpling was also excellent, we tried the 3 types combo. The only one I wont order again is the cheese one which felt a bit more fusion cuisine but good to try still. My favourite item by far is the scallion noodles, from the first bite I already decided is one of the best thing ever. Noodles were good texture and savoury and slightly sweet with a slight crisp of the fried scallion. Definitely will come back and recommend others and will order the noodles everytime.

quote Clean venue, yummy food and cheerful staff. Soup buns and cucumber salad are yum. Mini dumplings are cute and good to share.

quote Excellent dumpling place to visit in Albany! This is by far better than the majority of places i’ve visited. In terms of food, they give a really generous portion with good filling and really good soup. The smaller buns and dumplings are also really really good compared to many other competitors. Perhaps one of the best places! The service is quite cool, uses a scan QR code to see menu type of service. Food is served at moderate speeds, not too slow or fast. Atmosphere is also quite nice, not too noisy and plenty of seats.

quote We were so impressed by their dumpling dishes. The steamed soup dumplings were my favourite; it’s authentic, got lots of soup inside and the skin is very thin 🤤 their pan fried buns (especially vege & pork) are also a must-try: they are juicy, come with a generous amount of meat and are flavourful. The cucumber salad is sweet and refreshing which makes the perfect go-to side dish if you don’t know what to get. The only thing we weren’t too sure about was their noodle soup, it came with too much noodles and not enough flavour; all in all we would love to visit again. 😊
